How did you meet? And tell us about the proposal? Was it surprise?
Oh my gosh… sweet James proposed at our very favorite place in the entire world.. The Sanibel Lighthouse during sunset on December 7, 2021. It was so romantic and sweet. He got his parents to take pictures of us. I think after 6 years we had talked and knew it was happening soon, I hoped it would happen in Sanibel, but it was all so very special.
Tell us the inspiration/story behind your wedding?
We love going camping, hikes, and just being outdoors in general.
Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?
The Island Room in the Sanibel Marriot was the perfect place. I always dreamed on getting married with an ocean view, but noton the beach. Our colors are dusty blue, navy, silver, ivory, and sand. My family is from Argentina so I made sure to do somethings is Spanish. Our theme is formal beach/nautical. I want it to be subtle touches and not cheesy beach wedding.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time as a couple?
A little side note that will be important to know about me and James. We are BIG beach people… I have a successful Instagram and Tik Tok account named Shellebrate Life dedicated to my passion for beachcombing… that’s how much we love the beach.James and I spend hours snorkeling, beachcombing, and loving on marine life. James’s family has been vacationing in Sanibelsince the 1974!! My family has been vacationing in Seaside, FLsince the moment we moved to the US 20 years ago. The beach is a HUGE part of both of our families.
Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?
We wanted the wedding to be a classy and elegant beach-themed wedding without the “cheesy” things you normally think of as a beach wedding. I do not want flashy seashells or bright teal colors, but I want all of that in a very subtle way. Pictures out by the beach, dock, balcony, and palm trees. Pictures with family and friends. I want to capture the beach and nautical theme of our wedding and not forest, deep nature, etc. I am scared since it is a destination wedding that I will not get to bring or add a lot of personal touches to make the room come alive, but we will see. The decor is mostly DIY. The seating arrangement Oyster shells as plate centerpieces I made seashell fans for the cocktail hour so people can cool off I made our vow books
What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?
wooden Flowers thanks to the great recommendation of my day-of coordinator 🙂 I ordered 7 bridesmaid bouquet, 1 bridal bouquet, 10 boutonnieres, and one set of Arbor flowers. The goal is to re-use the bridal bouquets as centerpieces. I think this would be really good to lower cost of wedding.
Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?
I made fans for the cocktail hour. I made oyster shells for the plates. There’s a few touches here and there. My mom will be making the grandparent frames so that we can remember them in heaven.
Reasons for choosing your ceremony and reception venue?
The Island Room in the Sanibel Marriot was the perfect place. I always dreamed on getting married with an ocean view, but not on the beach. The Island room offers the beautiful ocean view while also being inside and staying cool. I really want to focus onthe pier, beach, sand, and balcony. The views are what is most important thing to us. I want everyone to feel like we are at the beach. I really wanted a room that was not 4 walls all closed in.
Helpful tip or advice for other engaged couples.
Definitely get a coordinator or someone who can help your vision come true. It is not worth stressing out and there is a lot to do. Everything will work out the way that it should and what matters the most is the love between the two lovers.
The most important lesson you learned from wedding planning.
It is hard and you need help from people. There is so much to do. There is also a lot of expectations or things you dreamed of make sure you speak up for yourself and do not compromise unless absolutely necessary.
What were some of the personal touches you adding that are a great reflection of you as a couple?
I would love for you to see our wedding website. theknot.com/rocio-james
How did you meet? And tell us about the proposal? Was it surprise?
We met on the website OK CUPID LOL his handle name was a jawdropper one so I had to respond and I was window shopping LOL we met on July 4th 2012!
He proposed at Fenway in Boston MA on the scoreboard and it was a total surprise, he basically had me convinced he’d never get married again so I never saw it coming, I still can’t believe we’re engaged lol. Total surprise!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time as a couple?
We love concerts it’s our number one thing we do together, we travel to see concerts and sporting events- we attend and host 50+concerts and sporting events a year, we love to go to dinner and the movies, shopping, museums, neat events locally, swimming in our pool, games nights at our home and entertaining for friends!
Reasons for choosing your ceremony and reception venue?
We met on 4th of July and want fireworks during our reception as we’re getting married on our 10 yr anniversary woohoo!
How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail?
I have my dress and its romantic and fairytale like!
How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY? What look did you go for? Romanic? Modern? Rustic? Moody? Beachy? Tropical? Boho?
I’m going for semi formal romantic with a touch of boho and white rustic if those are things you can put together.
Helpful tip or advice for other engaged couples.
I’d say look at inspiration online but don’t look at to much it’ll get overwhelming, instead draw from within yourself to make sure its who you are and what you want be careful its not a trend or something that you’ll end up regretting later in life. Also I subscribed to the ring boxes and I’m so happy I did, I just received my 2nd box and I love it! So far doing all the little silly things are making it more fun and less stressful, esp. hiring professional help, don’t try to do it yourself it’s worth the month to hire help!
The most important lesson you learned from wedding planning.
I’d say to definitely hire a wedding coordinator separate from the venue coordinators supplied to you, preferably Michelle Borrero!
How did you choose the colors of your wedding? Any advice you would give to other couples
My advice is don’t worry about what month it is or what season it is, I’m not worried! I’m having deep burgendy dresses with champagne blush and white for my colors, bridesmaid dresses are burgundy and its in July- just be careful if you do the red/burgundy in a month that isn’t Christmas if you don’t want it to look like Christmas in July then choose flower colors and decorations, arrangements etc carefully, that’s what I’m doing as I don’t want it to appear Christmassy.
We went to high school together, actually didn’t really like one another lol. I the bride graduated in 2014, and rick the groom graduated in 2012. We later reconnected in 2015 through social media. Rick was in a motorcycle accident shortly after we got together and he spent almost 4 months in the hospital learning how to use his strength to walk again. I never missed a day, throughout the hardship we both knew, we needed each other, forever. We began talking about marriage and children and I always said I wanted my proposal to embarrass me. I never knew it was coming, and ill never forget it. It was the summer of 2018 my first vacation week at Wildwood NJ, my fiance’s childhood vacation spot. As we get on the beach I asked to get photos before I got all messy and sweaty. He didn’t want to, so I threw a fit and took a nap LOL. I got woken up out of my sleep for “pictures”. I walk to the shore like and my sister-in-law asks what is that? She points to the ocean. It was a screened message boat with a quote “Kayla will you be my wife & Camden’s stepmom”? I turn around my fiance was on his knee and there was a photographer capturing it all.
The Inspiration & Story behind their Wedding
The happy couple recently got married at The Bishop Museum of Science & Nature. Our company loves using this location, they offer a beautiful outdoor space that accommodates any party size and has a touch of history and elegance that made it a perfect place for Ciarra and Michael to say “I do”. Ciarra explains that the inspiration behind their wedding was “I was throwing it all together hoping for the best. But Michelle has taken control of the decor etc which I’m happy about. We find that we are beachy, modern, and romantic, rustic, etc all in one. We find that we are beachy, modern, and romantic, rustic, etc all in one. I believe everything/diff decor can complement each other in their own ways if done correctly The Sandcastle Resort and Lido Beach were able to match both Kayla and Rick’s “Wedding day look” by setting a very tropical tone through the decorations and theme of the ceremony. They decided on their Wedding colors by incorporating some tropicals – blues, silvers, and Turquoise. We love the beach, we love Florida. We originally only wanted something small and intimate couple was able to pull off a stunning wedding and were fortunate to have it be in one of their favorite destinations!
Helpful Tips/Advice for Future Brides & Engaged Couples
Kayla emphasizes the importance of “Get a wedding planner first before anything!!! “The most important lesson I can give any bride is “That I should’ve hired a wedding planner before I did anything else.”
